Because of its sensitivity to jitter, latency and packet loss, VOIP is not simply another application running on data networks. Increasingly, VOIP deployments are faltering when users fail to take into account voice traffic's unique needs, experts say.
The company's new AppareNet Voice offering can be used to predetermine network readiness for carrying VOIP traffic and, after deployment, to find the cause and location of jitter, latency, packet loss, bottlenecks, configuration issues and more.

"Our new IP Videoconferencing solution will extend the reach of teachers to students outside the classroom, bring the world to students via virtual field trips, and eliminate the time and hassles associated with physically traveling from one meeting to another," Cisco education solutions manager Phylis Hawkins said in a statement. "With schools moving to IP-based networks, they are realizing not only the application benefits, but the cost benefits as well. "
According to collaboration technology market analysis firm Wainhouse Research, American schools are increasingly migrating to IP networks and ISDN to provide converged network access and to allow them to take advantage of Internet 2's advanced videoconferencing resources.

"With the MOS measurements, you can click on a graphic scale, and it'll play back what the voice quality sounds like at that MOS score," said Kelly Daniels, chief technology officer at Apparent Networks, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Texas A&M used AppareNet Voice to locate problems "down to the router on another institution's network," said Magnussen.

Integrated VoIP conferencing combines voice, video, Web and instant-messaging functionality into a single, seamless meeting experience. According to Richard Zimmermann, Forsythe Technology's director of network solutions, the technology differs from earlier forms of conferencing in several ways.
With new on-premise conferencing systems, such as Cisco's MeetingPlace or Nortel's Multimedia Communications Server, customers exercise greater control over their conferencing environments.
